Space Race • The US and USSR had been involved in a Space Race since the launch of Sputnik in 1957 • The US feared this made communism look more advanced than capitalism • Kennedy urged NASA to create the technology to send a man into space, and, ultimately, to t he moon. • 1962- John Glenn becomes first American to orbit the earth • 1969- Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins land on the moon

  4. II. Global Challenges • Kennedy felt that the US needed to rely on more than just nuclear weapons in the fight against communism and built up conventional weapons and troops.

Alliance for Progress • JFK believed aiding countries in need would help to contain communism • Latin America: • Many corrupt governments run by the wealthy, often supported by the US. Most citizens lived in extreme poverty and supported leftist movements to overthrow these groups. • JFK created the Alliance for Progress to aid Latin American reform. $20 billion over 10 years to create better schools, housing, healthcare, etc. • Mixed results: Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Central America = reform. Others = corruption and government keeps money.

  6. II. Global Challenges (cont) C. The Peace Corps 1. Aimed at helping less developed nations fight poverty 2. Sent young people to underdeveloped countries to teach English, build roads, sewage systems, and schools, and helped train medical technicians. 3. One of JFK’s most enduring legacies.
