The topic sentences for these paragraphs should mimic the thesis statement. Three is not a magic number.
Broad Narrowing in More specific Focused thesis The Introductory Paragraph Broad statement introducing the topic to be discussed in the paper. This statement may also be a quote over the topic. Statement introducing the work to be analyzed in the essay. Statement connecting the topic to the work. The connection may take 2 to 3 sentence. The lead-in needs to be smooth, not abrupt. Thesis statement of the essay (What you intend to discuss and prove in your essay.)
Sample Essay Response Topic In many works of literature, past events can effect, positively or negatively, the actions, attitudes, or values of a character. Choose a novel in which a character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal. Then write an essay in which you show how the character’s relationship to the past contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.

“All we need is love.” This overly simplified belief echoed by a popular 1960s Beatles’ song may in fact bear some truth. The idea of love’s miraculous power has also filled the lines and pages of many poems, songs, and novels alike. Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables is a powerful story of poverty, social injustice, redemption, and yes, the undeniable power of love. In his novel, Hugo’s transformation of Jean Valjean from a life of dejection and despair to one of redemption and forgiveness reveals that any man, even one with the most hardened of hearts, can be saved by a simple act of love.
