THE MAINSTREAM’S REACTION At First- Outraged, thought the Hippies were disgusting un-Americans “Plastic Hippies”- Part time Hippie. Many dressed The part on weekends, but weren’t ready to drop out.
Eventually- A lot of the Hippie culture was absorbed into the mainstream. The Hippie look & slang are two examples.
DECLINE OF THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT Reason #1- Commercialism, the mainstream started making money off the Hippie name. Reason #2- Hangouts became too dangerous. Rise in crime & harder drugs.
What did many Hippies do? “Flocked to nature”. They set up communes in the mountains, woods, and on farms.
Impact of this- It reduced their influence on the younger generation in the cities since they were no longer there.
By the end of the 60s / early 70s- MOST Hippies had filtered right back into mainstream society.
