My Small Class And the ped-ilogical journey it sent me on.
The nature of the small class • More one on one time for students • Less in-class competition • Absences drastically change class dynamic • Student interaction affected • Easier to actively “watch” the whole class
The nature of the required class • It is likely that a percentage of students don’t want to be there • The curriculum is not as flexible • Students know what is coming
Motivation • Motives are relatively general needs or desires that energize people to initiate purposeful action sequences. In contrast, goals are more specific and used to explain the direction and quality of action sequences in particular situations (Thrash & Elliot, 2001)
Types of Goals • Learning goals- (mastery goals, task involment goals) • Preformance goals- (ego-involment goals) • Work avoidance goals
Motivational theories • Learning is fun, motivation happens naturally • Students have to be there, they don’t want to be and the grade is the only carrot teachers have. • The teacher should find ways to incorporate individuals goals into the curriculum • “Develop and sustain our students’ motivation to learn: their tendencies to find learning activities meaningful and worthwhile and try to get the intended benefits from them.” -JereBrophy
Create a Learning Community • Make the class room inviting, be inclusive • Be aware of communication style • Focus on essentials
