Objectives • Students will begin to utilize the FSU COM virtual library resources to locate clinical information online • Identify the type of question you have: background or clinical • Distinguish which type of resource would best answer a clinical question: drug, disease or differential diagnosis resource • Identify the type and depth of information contained in various resources. • Find answers to clinical questions in the library resources.
What Kind of Question Do I Have? • Basic science or background question? • What is an olecranon? [for personal learning] • What is Kawasaki Disease? • Clinical question? [for patient care] • What are the risk factors for Heart Disease? • Which is better for diagnosing pneumonia: x-ray, CT or MRI? [Diagnosis] • Which antibiotic(s) should I prescribe for MRSA? Answering a Background Question • Searching most efficient • Google/Wikipedia (assess the validity) • Use Medical Dictionary • Use basic science textbooks • Listed under Course Pages on Library

Answering Clinical Questions • Quickest method: Browse a specific resource • Requires: knowing the content of sites/resources • Starting point: Library web page or your handheld (iPod/iPad or smartphone) • Learn to use subscription resources
