Criticized Central Committee in 1923 for their conduct on economic policy and persuaded some members to sign his criticism so was viewed as factionalism Wanted Permanent Revolution so this caused Russians to fear that they might be involved in another conflict Became ill at crucial point when Lenin was indisposed
Triumvirate Made up Kamenev, Zinoviev and Stalin Plotted to get rid of Trotsky’s influence They had strong power base Outvoted Trotsky in all levels Denouncing him became routine in 1928, Trotsky was exiled to Kazakhstan and 1929 expelled from USSR.
Stalin Personality Shrewd – was able to read personalities and manipulate people and situation Played one faction against the other Initially supported Kamenev and Zinoviev against Trotsky Then supported Bukharin against the two on NEP Finally opposed Bukharin on NEP and became the dominant power
Lenin personally wanted him to be part of Central Committee in April 1917 Was made Commissar for Nationalities after the Revolution. This gave him the power to appoint people to senior positions around the region 1919, he became the head of Rabkrin which gave him the power to check on those in the government service and departments. He could dismiss opposition and appoint his supporters. Positions
