Implementation-sub Saharan Africa • Africa 22% of all notified TB patients were tested for HIV in 2006. • Five fold increase of HIV testing of TB patients in 11 African countries with 57% of the global burden over 3 years. • Countries passed the Global plan target (51% by 2006). • Rwanda (76%) • Malawi (64%) • Kenya (60%)
Regional/ Special Population Responses • Drug use- Guidelines in progress for providing integrated TB and HIV prevention (Christian,Kathrin) • Western Pacific Region: Revised regional strategic plan in Phnom Pen • Latin America: Meeting in Lima, Peru. Region developing TB/HIV management manuel
PEPFAR Meeting • Planning underway for second “Acceleration in implementation meeting” co-sponsored by PEPFAR/WHO • Propose to add 5 additional countries • Best practices by Kenya and Rwanda and Ethiopia
Strategic policy and programme issues • IPT statement • TB infection control • WHO 3Is meeting • Monitoring and evaluation • Diagnostics • New TOR of WG operational To be discussed in this meeting
Strategic issue-IPT statement • CG statement released during IUATLD conference in November 2007 • Full WG consultation undergone • Endorsement discussed at IAS governing council meeting • Commissioned article on World AIDS Day released via HATIP newsletter • Manuscript for AIDS Journal being prepared
Strategic issue- TB Infection control • ToR developed and definite chair appointed and a 10 member core team being constituted • Framework document addressing IC interventions being developed • Training courses held (Nov 2007) to develop a pool of international and country-specific consultants to assist countries • Planning framework developed to assist countries in Global Fund proposals in round 8 • Will be discussed further in this meeting
Strategic Issue: WHO 3Is Meeting • Infection control, IPT and ICF • Sponsored by WHO HIV with participation by both and HIV and TB stakeholders
Strategic Issue: Monitoring and Evaluation • Task force formed after Amsterdam • Multiple teleconferences and email discussions • Harmonization with PEPFAR, UNAIDS on indicators
Strategic Issue: Diagnostics • Task force formed • Teleconference meetings • Challenge to maintain engagement • Summary document will be discussed • Participation on CG members at Cambridge TB dipstick meeting
Strategic issue-New TOR of WG • Revised ToR in effect 2008 - 2013 • Core Group membership – institutional and individual members • 187 new and renewal members with the following specialities • HIV/AIDS: 42 • TB : 38 • TB/HIV : 53 • Combination of the above : 54

Research: CROI 2008 • TB visibility continued in CROI 2008 • Abstract and non abstract sessions • HIV/TB meeting focused on ICF and TB prevention • More than 50 participants • interactive session
Summary • Implementation: Definite improvement in some areas, still far from targets, poor uptake in IPT which needs continued focus • Monitoring and evaluation prospect of improving within reach and will be invaluable metric • Visibility and cooperation among international bodies increasing, higher profile in HIV community • Areas in need of focus: Infection control, intensified case finding, diagnostics, research funding, greater engagement of PEPFAR country implementers in WG
