  4. Zero Dark Thirty iS Fiction Zero Dark Thirty is a critically acclaimed film nominated for many awards. Unfortunately, the filmmakers chose to imply – inaccurately – that torture leads to reliable intelligence.The movie opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, January 11.

  5. The FACTS • The clues that were essential to the hunt for Osama bin Laden were obtained through humane methods. • Torture, in fact, produced false leads that wasted valuable staff time. • Torture is illegal, immoral and counterproductive.

  6. Those who know the facts “[The] CIA did not first learn about the existence of the [Osama bin Laden] courier from detainees subjected to coercive interrogation techniques. Nor did the agency discover the courier's identity from detainees subjected to coercive techniques.” - Joint statement from: Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Chairman, Senate Intelligence Committee and Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) Chairman, Senate Armed Services Committee “It was not torture or cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of detainees that got us the major leads that ultimately enabled our intelligence community to find Osama bin Laden.” - Senator John McCain (R-AZ) “In the end, no detainee in CIA custody revealed the facilitator/courier’s full true name or specific whereabouts. This information was discovered through other intelligence means.”- Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta (former CIA Director)

The message of the “Fact Not Fiction” campaign: If you see the movie Zero Dark Thirty or if you wish to learn more about torture, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture asks you to take 20 minutes to view its short film on why torture is immoral, illegal and counterproductive. Senate Intelligence Committee Torture Report • The Senate Intelligence Committee recently approved, with a bi-partisan vote, a report on CIA torture. • The report is over 6,000 pages and describes the findings of a more than three-year investigation into the use of torture. • According to Senators Feinstein, Levin, and McCain (who know what is in the report), the investigation showed that torture was harmful to U.S. national security and that it did not provide us with critical intelligence leading to Osama bin Laden. • The report is also said to include a detailed analysis of the decisions that led to torture and suggestions for safeguards to prevent torture in the future. • Though the report has not been made public, it is very important that a version be released soon.

The “Fact Not Fiction” Campaign The elements of the campaign: • Show the NRCAT video Ending U.S.-Sponsored Torture Forever in your congregation, on your campus, or host a coffee hour in your home, and use the new NRCAT study guide between now and the end of Torture Awareness Month (June 2013). • Contact key senators and the President about making the Intelligence Committee torture report public. NRCAT will provide a model email and contact information for key decision-makers. • Write a Letter to the Editor (LTE) to your local newspaper responding to articles about the Zero Dark Thirty. NRCAT will provide suggested talking points. • Leaflet theaters where the film is being shown to urge those who have watched the movie to also view NRCAT’s video.
