About it! Elephants everywhere (mostly in Africa) are being killed for their tusks. Ivory poaching has risen to a level not seen in 20 years! From 2005 to 2006,athourites seized about 24 tons of ivory for Asia. But that is only 10% of the illegal shipments, concluding the total- about 240 tons. All that ivory cost about 23,000 elephants their lives. IN 2002, a shipment in Singapore included 532 tusks, and 42,000 hankos, or chops. That seizure was the second largest shipment on record and the largest since 1989. About it! Where is this happening? Why is this happening? Whose helping and how they are helping… People still think ivory poaching is okay, but there are others who think it is wrong. Michael Fay, an elephant researcher, was flying over a national park in northern Congo, when he saw bunches of elephant carcasses. Another helper is Wasser, the director of the Center of Conservation Biology at the University of Washington. One thing Wasser did is that he urged western governments to help African nations. A quote of Wasser’s is: “If it really is and organized crime that’s driving this, then the only hope we have of stopping it is to stop the ivory at the source, and not let it into the international market.” About it!
