Question • What’s Common in the Commonwealth?
MYTH #1 “The safety belt system doesn’t work because I can move around when I’m wearing it.”
FACT: Safety Restraints are designed to allow movement and only “lock” when there is an impact or when the car swerves or suddenly stops
MYTH #2 “The safety belt will trap me in a burning or submerged vehicle.”
FACT: Less than one-half of one percent of injury-producing collisions involves fire or submersion. If we don’t wear safety belts, we have a very good chance of being knocked unconscious and not escaping
MYTH #3 “In a crash, it is much better to be thrown from the vehicle.”
FACT: If thrown from the vehicle in a crash, our chance of being seriously injured increase by a factor of 25, I.e. You are 25 times more likely to be seriously injured if thrown from the vehicle
MYTH #4 “I don’t really need a safety belt because I’m only going a short distance.”
FACT: Most driving trips are short distances. Research shows that an average trip length is 9.1 miles and that 64 % of all trips take place within five miles of home.
MYTH #5 “Safety belts are unnecessary now that a lot of cars have air bags.”
FACT: Air Bags are designed to work with lap and shoulder belts. They do not provide protection to unbelted vehicle occupants.
Get the facts... • Every 11 seconds someone is injured in a traffic crash. • Every 13 minutes someone is killed.
The force of a 30 mph crash... is roughly equivalent to falling out of a third floor window!
Every day 3 American workers die on the job in a motor vehicle crash.
What can you do? Safety Belts Are The Solution!
The Perfect Combination Safety Belts Air Bags
SAFETY BELTS They should NEVER have time off!
Seat belt usage: FOR THE YEAR 2000 NATIONAL RATE FOR SEAT BELT USE WAS: 70% IN VIRGINIA THE RATE WAS: 69.9%
BUT !!! A national safety belt use rate of 85% could: Save over 4,000 lives and prevent more than 100,000 injuries Reduce the cost of crashes by nearly $7 Billion
