  1. Changing School Climate Through LINKS – A Peer to Peer Approach Tiffinny Blore – Special Education Teacher, Sault Area High School

  2. Climate Climate consists of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, and other meteorological elemental measurements in a given region over long periods.

  3. Climate vs. Weather Climate can be contrasted to weather, which is the present condition of these elements and their variations over shorter periods.

  4. Temperature Temperature quantitatively expresses the common notions of hot and cold. Who controls the temperature at your school?

  5. Humidity Humidity is a term for the amount of water vapor in the air. Specific humidity is a ratio of the water vapor content of the mixture to the total air content.

  6. Atmospheric Pressure Atmospheric pressure is the force exerted into a surface by the weight of air above that surface. Low-pressure areas have less atmospheric mass above their location, whereas high-pressure areas have more atmospheric mass above their location.

  7. Wind Wind is the flow of gases on a large scale. On Earth, wind consists of the bulk movement of air.

  8. Precipitation Precipitation forms as smaller droplets come together via collision with other rain drops or ice crystals within a cloud.

  9. Climate Change Climate change is the variation in global or regional climates over time. It reflects changes in the variability or average state of the atmosphere over time scales ranging from decades to millions of years.

  10. Why do we have to change the climate? • Isolation of special education students away from the general education population • Fear of unknown • Misunderstanding of disabilities • No opportunity to interact

  11. Portrait of Ms. Blore’s 2011 Classroom • Variety of ages: 13-23 • Variety of needs (disabilities): ASD, CI, SXI, LD • Little interaction with typically developing peers except for lunch and assemblies

  12. Process of Getting P2P Program • Meeting with variety of teachers • Provide opportunities (site, Homecoming) • P2P training • Pilot Program
