  3. INTRODUCTION

  4. According to Malaysian Road Safety Department,3.9% road death increase in 2008 compared to the previous year. Traffic signs represent one of the most common devices for controlling traffic in that they help regulate, warn, and guide road users. In spite of their importance, traffic signs are not always clear to the drivers (Tamar & David 2006)

  5. METHODOLOGY JUSTIFICATION

  6. 1. To increase awareness and ethic driving on road. 2. To decrease road accident risk. 3. To improve the knowledge regarding traffic sign among student. 4. To know the comprehension regard traffic sign among student.

  7. LITERATURE REVIEW

  8. Definition of sign board Sign : Indicates that something exist or may happen that you can find or see Board : A piece of wood or other strong material that is used for special purpose (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 6th Edition)

  9. General definition: A piece of wood, paper or metal that has writing or picture on it that gives you information, instruction and a warning. (Ahmad Nazri, 2005) Specific definition: Used to give information about the location of either the driver or possible destinations and are considered a subset of informative sign group. (Ross & Alan, 1992)

  10. Types of sign board 1) Law sign board- no entry, speed zone, stop 2) Warning sign board- dangerous bend road, slippery road, accident spot 3) Direction sign board- destination sign board, information sign board (Law T.H, 2004)

  11. Function of sign board • To arrange, warn and guide towards road users. • To give information about direction and road name. • To inform the destination, tourism places, recreation and attraction location. • To inform rules at certain place and time. (Marc Green & John Senders, 2004)

  12. OBJECTIVES

  13. GENERAL OBJECTIVES Study the understanding about road sign among the first year FSKB student in UKM,KL.

  14. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Identify the student knowledge. Observe the dissimilar in knowledge between gender. Observe the knowledge differential between student with license and student without license.

  15. Observe the knowledge dissimilarities about road sign among student whom live in town and student live in village. Study the students’ source of knowledge about road sign.

  16. HYPOTHESIS

  17. 1. There are different between knowledge score and comprehension score regarding to road sign. 2. There are differences in knowledge on road sign between gender.

  18. 3. There are differences in knowledge on road sign between student with and without license. 4. There are differences in knowledge on road sign between student from town and student from village.

  19. 5. The source of student’s knowledge on road sign .

  30. Research Methodology

  31. Background -1st year student among 12 programs in FSKB UKM KL intake 2008/2009. Research Design - Cross sectional study

  32. Sampling Method • Population target - UKM KL student • Population sample - 1st year FSKB student intake 2008/2009 • Sample size - 192 student(calculation from sample size of selected population formula)

  33. Data Collection Method a) List name of first year students of FSKB UKM, KL are collected. b) Using stratified sampling method, we divide the student population according to gender. c) Followed by simple random sampling to distribute the questionnaire.

  34. d) from the questionnaire, we can get the population whether having license or not. e) Questionnaires consist of multiple choice, text open end and agreement scale (close end) test types are distribute among the samples.

  35. Analysis : the collected data from the completed survey forms are analyzed using the SPSS. The following are the tests used for this research: a) Independent T testb) One-way Chi square c) Logistic Regression

  39. There are too many sign on road that makes respondents hard to memorize the meanings of the symbols. • There are certain that road sign are not very familiar to the respondents. • Friend’s influences which is respondents will not uses their on understanding.
