  3. Stem-changing verbs • In Spanish, some verbs have a stem change in the present tense. • Stem-changing verbs have regular-ar,-er & -ir present tense endings. • Stem-changing verbs e-ie. Querer=to want quieroqueremos quieresqueréis quierequieren **You have a stem change in all except nosotoros/as and vosotros/as!!

  4. Other e-ie stem-changing verbs • cerrar=to close • empezar=to start • entender=to understand • pensar=to think, to plan to • preferir= to prefer

  5. Two verbs in one sentence! • Notice that when one verb follows another, the first verb is conjugated and the second is in its infinitive form. • Ella piensaalmorzar con Maria. • Yoprefierohablar. • Nosotrosqueremosir al cine. • Yocomo la hamburguesa y beboel agua.

  8. Expression with tener • Tener is used to form many expression that in English you would use the verb to be. • Tenercalor = to be hot • Tenerfrío = to be cold • Tenerrazón = to be right • Tenersuerte = to be lucky En el inviernotengofrío. Yotengomuchasuerte.

  11. Direct Object Pronouns • Remember direct object receives the action of the verb. • They answer the question whom or what? about the verb. • What is the direct object? • I sell the book. • You want the shirts. • He buys the red skirt. • We visit her. • They have a cat.

  12. Direct object pronouns • Direct object pronouns can be used to replace the direct object nouns. • Change the direct object with the direct object pronoun. • I sell the book. • You want the shirts. • He buy the red skirt. • We visit her. • They have a cat.

  13. Direct object pronouns • me (me) nos (us) • te (you) os (you pl) • lo (you,him,it) los (you pl, them) • la (you, her,it) las (you pl, them) • The direct object pronoun is placed before the conjugated verb. • Yoquiero el agua. Yoloquiero.

  14. Direct object pronoun • When an infinitive follows the conjugated verb, the direct object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive. • Yoloquierocomprar. (book) • Yoquierocomprarlo. (book)

  15. Change the following sentences to say what the following people don’t want the following items. Change the direct object with the correct direct object pronoun. • Yoquiero los pantalones. • Ella quiere el sombrero. • Yoquiero comer las papas fritas. • Nosotrosqueremos el gorro. • Mi amigaquiere la blusa. • Vosotrosqueréisvisitar los abuelos. • Ustedesquierenbeberagua. • Túquieres los jeans.
