Atmosphere - Ionosphere - Magnetosphere Working Group • Howard Singer • Jan Sojka • Tim Fuller-Rowell • Dan Baker • Ray Greenwald • Maura Hagan • Roger Smith • Paul Kintner • Nicky Fox • Mary Hudson • Janet Kozyra • Michelle Thompson • George Siscoe • Dave Byers
Key discussion points • Building on existing infra-structure - GEM, SHINE, CEDAR & encompass, leverage and expand - CAWSES, ILWS, eGY • Building legacy • Virtual conferences - video conferencing • Cutting through boundaries - international cooperation • Community-wide initiative • Encouragement of young scientists
Unifying Theme • The original IGY encompassed all of the geophysical domains from oceans to atmospheres. • After the IGY the separate fields dispersed and evolved into large communities. • Now it is the 50th anniversary of the original IGY and this has caused all of these disciplines to re-aggregate and recreate the conditions which fostered the successful IGY. • As our contribution to IHY, we propose to implement two major thrusts utilizing theory, observations and modeling: • End-to-end solar terrestrial system studies • Comparative A-I-M systems
Science Thrusts with Examples • End-to-end Solar-Terrestrial System Studies: Modeling and Observations • A: Storm time response of the inner magnetosphere and ionosphere-thermosphere • B: Real-time global ionosphere • C: Sources of variability of the geomagnetically undisturbed atmosphere and ionosphere • D: Small-scale structures
Science Thrusts with Examples • Comparative A-I-M Systems • A: Comparative studies of auroral dynamics on Earth, Jupiter and Saturn • B: Comparative studies of storms and substorms at different planets • C: Comparative studies of the radiation environment at different planets
Framework • Title • Campaign leader • Science question/goal • What’s unique for IHY a. Interdisciplinary b. International c. Global (big picture ideas) d. Discovery potential • Key instrumentation and data • Models • Key proposals for community • Collaborations • Workshops/collaborations • Educational opportunities • Legacy potential:
End-to-end Solar-Terrestrial System Studies: Modeling and Observations • Title: Real-time global ionosphere • Campaign leader: Tim Fuller-Rowell • Science question/goal: Characterizing the global ionospheric variability as a function of season and geomagnetic activity • What’s unique for IHY a. Interdisciplinary (coupling with lower atmosphere, solar radiation and solar electrodynamics) b. International (data contributions from many countries) c. Global (big picture ideas) - global characteristics with high-fidelity d. Discovery potential - longitudinal dependence in structures during varied external conditions • Key instrumentation and data: Global network of GPS, COSMIC • Models: Test existing numerical models including data assimilation • Key proposals -Providing GPS systems to developing countries in key gaps • Collaborations - CAWSES, VxOs, eGY, • Workshops/collaborations: Topical electronic workshops • Educational opportunities: Involving multi-national real-time effort with possible school programs
Comparative A-I-M Systems • Title: Comparative studies of auroral dynamics on Earth, Jupiter and Saturn • Campaign leader: Recommendations John Clarke/Fran Bagenal • Science question/goal: Understand the similarities and differences of physical processes creating aurora on different planetary systems • What’s unique for IHY a. Interdisciplinary b. International c. Global (big picture ideas) d. Discovery potential • Key instrumentation and data: Cassini, JMEX, … • Models: Test existing numerical models • Key proposals - HST time • Collaborations - Planetary data system, … • Workshops/collaborations: Topical electronic workshops • Educational opportunities: Similarities and difference between our planet and others in the solar system
Legacy Potential Examples • Elevation of the role of modeling into a complementary research tool (maturing of modeling techniques including data assimilation) • Furthering the establishment of comparative A-I-M systems as a discipline • Utilizing eGY efforts to provide enhanced capabilities during the IHY and for future science endeavors • Creating new connectivity in science cooperation • Producing a comprehensive database which can be mined for future scientific discoveries
