Uniforms for Unity • We believe this slogan is a positive message about how uniforms can unite a school and community. Uniforms give the students a sense of pride in their school. It also makes them feel like they are all part of the same team, instead of divided into cliques. Improving a students self-esteem and making them feel equal to their peers is our number one goal.
Written Statement • We chose to advocate for school uniforms in public schools. School uniforms come in different styles and colors: formal styles, semi-formal styles, and casual styles. School should be the place where students shine through their academic abilities, not what brands they wear. Thirty-seven schools across Arkansas have school uniforms; twelve of those being public schools. Having school uniforms allows the students to discover their peers personalities are deeper than the way they accessorize. Studies show that students who wear uniforms at school experience the following: high self-esteem, feel a sense of pride in their school, have higher grades, and show reduction in violence.
Types of Uniforms • Formal -Blazers, tie, and slacks • Semi Formal -Blazers, tie, and shorts • Casual Uniforms -Colored polo and shorts/slacks
Positive Attributes • Reduces violence/behavior issues • Reduces social pressures • Saves parents money • Fosters school unity • Allows students to concentrate on academics • Shows that personality is deeper than wardrobe
Opposing Views • Interfere with self-expression • Unnecessary expense • Doesn’t eliminate cliques • Just masks violence doesn’t fix it • Creates negative self-image • States that conformity is answer to issues

Uniforms inCaruthersville, Mo • In 2009 schools in Caruthersville, MO switched to a mandatory school uniform policy. School officials say it's an effort to focus attention on schoolwork and foster school pride."I think it's great because the boys won't have saggy pants or anything and they'll have to tuck their shirt in so it won't be long," said Caruthersville 4th grader Christopher Smith. So in an effort to encourage school image and a sense of school pride, the Caruthersville school board passed a uniform code. Students must now wear red, white, or blue collared shirts with khaki, blue or black slacks, shorts, or skirts.
Layne's Experience • My friend, Layne, wore uniforms at one of the schools he attended for two years. When he started that school his family knew about the uniform policy and didn’t see a problem with it. I asked him what he thought about wearing uniforms and he said, “I liked the idea that I always knew what to wear to school. It took off the stress of finding something to wear in the morning. I also liked that it wasn’t just one kind of shirt and pants; we had long-sleeves and short-sleeve shirts in different colors and different colors of pants and shorts to choose from.”
