Student Chapter Overview Student Chapters can be established at any post secondary school that supports SMT, microelectronics, electronics packaging, or related subjects • Student Members – A minimum of 5 student members must have a current SMTA membership to start a chapter and to maintain active status – An annual student membership is $5.00 per year; apply at www.smta.org – Student members receive the same benefits as SMTA members, with the exception of voting privileges • Complete the Student Chapter Application
Student Chapter OverviewContinued… • Student Chapter must have a Faculty Advisor – Provides continuity & direction to the chapter – Serves as the link to the Student Chapter Committee & to SMTAHQ – Advisor must be a current SMTA Member • Student Chapters receive financial assistance –SMTA will provide a rebate back to the chapter equal to one-half ($2.50) of each new Student Membership Fee – SMTA will provide a $100 / year Activity Grant for operating expenses if required reports are submitted by the annual June 30 deadline
Student Chapter OverviewContinued… • Student Members are encouraged to participate in… – Local SMTA Chapter meetings & sponsored events – SMTA national educational events – Expos & Tech Forums • Local SMTA Chapters support students and can enhance Student Chapter activities – SMTA HQ will provide information for the local chapter closest to a new Student Chapter – Contact local Chapter for ideas, speakers for meetings or a classroom presentation, or to plan a joint meetings
Student Chapter Organization Student Chapter President • Reports to the SMTA Vice President of Membership • Works with SMTA Student Chapter Coordinator Student Chapter President Duties • Responsible for the overall Student Chapter • Conducts initial and end of year elections for chapter offices • Plans yearly program and activities with the help of officers or Formation committee members • Submits Annual Reports to SMTA HQ by May 30 deadline to receive $100 Activity Grant • Maintains communication with SMTA Student Chapters Coordinator to keep memberships current and Chapter active
Student Chapter Responsibilities • Plan 3 Chapter meetings per academic year • Elect Chapter Officers • Complete Application Form to start a new chapter • Plan and coordinate chapter activities • Hold annual elections at the end of each spring term & transition officers • Maintain communication with SMTA HQ • Forward new Chapter Officers information to SMTA HQ after elections • Send Student Chapter news to be used in SMTAnews, quarterly Journal of SMTA, and SMTA web site • Update SMTA Student Chapter website • Submit Reports to SMTA HQ by June 30 • Submit Annual Chapter Report & Financial Report for past school year by deadline to receive $100 Activity Grant for operating expenses • Confirm student memberships needed to maintain active chapter status
Student Chapter Meeting Ideas • Invite speakers from a Local Chapter or related business to make technical presentations • Discuss SMTA Journal articles or technical papers from Proceedings CD’s • Visit related manufacturing facilities in the geographic area • Attend local SMTA Chapter meetings • Attend SMTA Education Events or Expo & Tech Forums as a group • Prepare a project poster or display of chapter/school information for local Chapter meetings • Work with local chapter to plan a career focused panel with a Q&A session for students
Where’s My WIIFM?(What’s in it for me?) • Receive Student Membership Benefits • Search & download FREE) over 2000 technical articles in the Knowledge Base • Post a resume or search SMTA Job Postingsfrom member companies • Apply for Charles Hutchins Grant (must meet grant criteria) • And many more… • Join MentorNet – an SMTA email mentoring program • Find a mentor working in related industries, government or higher education to help guide your career development and practice interviewing techniques • Post your resume on MentorNet Resume Database for internship or employment opportunities • Attend annual SMTA International Conference • Submit an abstract and if it is accepted and scheduled for presentation- registration fee is only $25 (Regular price $450-$550) • Serve as a Student Monitor and audit the course for free!
Where’s My WIIFM?Student Membership Benefits • Develop Leadership & Organizational Skills • Serve as a Student Chapter officer • Participate on a committee of the local SMTA Chapter • Volunteer for educational events, or Expos & Tech Forums • Apply for the $5000 Hutchins Educational Grant • Qualified students attending schools in the US and Canada can apply for the annual $5,000 Charles Hutchins Grant (See website for criteria and process) • Grant recipient receives a complimentary pass to the annual SMTA International Conference and travel expenses paid by SMTA • Access the SMTA Job Center • Post a resume on SMTA’s Web site • Search SMTA Job Postings from member companies
