  1. UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA (KAMPUS PULAU PINANG) BEL 311 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES Extra work way to over come child abduction LECTURER : PN SUZANA AB RAHIM MEMBER: MOHD NAZIR BIN MOHAMAD KHAMIM MOHD NUR ARIFF BIN NORDIN

  2. Way to overcome child abduction Young children should: • never answer the door if they are alone. • not invite anyone into the house without the permission of a parent or babysitter. • not go into people's houses without letting anyone know where they are. • never get into anyone's car without permission. • not take candy or other gifts from strangers or anyone else without asking a parent first.

  3. One of the biggest ways you can prevent your child from being abducted is by simply teaching them the basics. For younger children that includes their full name, home address, phone numbers, and basic rules (never talk to strangers, never leave the side of an adult, etc.). • You should teach your children these basic rules: • Always tell your parents where you will be. • Never get into vehicles without your parent's permission. • Don't take shortcuts or go to places where you will be alone. • If you get separated from your parents, find a store or police officer to help you. Don't go looking! • The child should always tell you if someone makes them uncomfortable or scared. • Going over these rules and making sure your child knows their basic information can be a great deterrent from an abduction.

  4. Be Involved in Activities If you're able, you should try to involve yourself in some of your child's activities. Simple things like offering to coach, chaperoning a field trip or eating lunch with your child can both give you a better insight into their life and help increase your child's trust in you. Use this list of parent/child activities for ideas to spend more time with your child. When you're around them try to learn more about their habits, friends, and events. • Know and Keep Detailed Records This is single most important step in the event that an abduction occurs. 75% of all child abductions happen by a family member or acquaintance so it is important to have accurate details about the people that your child comes in contact with. Also the first few hours are the most important in recovering you child. Use a service like Instant Amber to keep a record of your child's details. Using a service like Instant Amber allows you to archive important information regarding your child including their habits and relationships so in that time of need it will be instantly available to state and federal law enforcement.

  5. never play in deserted buildings or isolated areas. • scream and scatter books and belongings if they are forced toward a building or car. • move away from a car that pulls up beside them if they do not know the driver. • tell you, school authorities or a police officer about anyone who exposes private parts. • tell you if someone has asked them to keep a secret from you.

  6. be taught their full telephone number and address. • be taught that it's all right to say 'no' to an adult if the person wants them to do something you've taught them is wrong. • know that no one has the right to touch any part of their bodies that a bathing suit would cover. • go to the nearest cashier if lost or separated from you in a store or mall.

  7. Teens should: • tell you where they are at all times or leave a written or recorded message at home. • never hitchhike. • avoid shortcuts through empty parks, fields, laneways or alleys. • run home or go to the nearest public place and yell for help if they are being followed.

  8. learn to recognize suspicious behavior and remember a description of the person or vehicle to give you or the police. Write the plate number in the dirt or snow if nothing else is available. • if attacked for money, jewelry or clothing give it up rather than risk injury. Girls: • Don’t wear provocative or sexy clothing as this attracts older men.  • Don’t flirt with groups of boys or strangers.

  9. Parents should: • avoid clothing and toys with your child's name on it. A child is less likely to fear someone that knows his/her name. • check all potential babysitters and older friends of your child. • never leave a child alone in a public place, stroller or car. Not even for a minute. • always accompany young children to the bathroom in a public place and advise them never to play in or around the area.

  10. always accompany your child on door-to-door activities, i.e. Halloween, school fundraising campaigns, etc. • point out safe houses or homes with the Block Parent sign where children can go if they are in trouble. • keep an up-to-date colour photograph of your child, a medical and dental history, and have your child fingerprinted.

  11. Parent and child need to agree on a simple code word for emergency situations. A trusted adult who knows the code word can pick up your child, and your child knows it is OK to go with them. • Parents need to provide contact information to their children (phone numbers where they can be reached, including home, office and cell phone). • Parents should make sure that their children remember their own name, address and phone number. • Teach your children not to accept rides and gifts from strangers. Tell them it's OK to say no. • Teach your children to get permission before getting a ride or going anywhere with someone. • Have a plan in case your child gets separated from you in public. • Teach your children to stay in groups when going anywhere (friends).
