Who shall get the farmers dowry? Farmer I am a strong farmer and lease 200 acres of land from Count de Salis. I have one son and three daughters- Aoife, Fiona and Lauren. I give constant employment to a number of men and women and own fifty beautiful cows. I must decide on one daughter to give my substantial dowry to and I’m asking your help to decide.
Contestant Number 1: Aoife • I am 35 years old and I am very close to my father. • I have no partner at the moment • If I do not receive my father’s dowry I think I shall emigrate to America as I do not want to stay on the family farm forever.
Contestant 2: Fiona • I am 30 years old and I have an interesting relationship with my father • I love my father but resent the way he has strict control over the family. • If I don’t receive the dowry I will probably stay on the family farm with my brother.
Contestant Number 3: Lauren • I am 28 years old and my father and I are very close. I am the youngest in the family. • If I do not receive the dowry there is no way I will marry a poor man! • I will emigrate to America or Britain.
Who receives the dowry? You decide! • This was just a small exercise to get you thinking about the decisions fathers had to make and what people on the farm were faced with.
Questions • Why did strong farmers marry late in life? • Who inherited the farm? • Why do you think farmers at this time had a strong control over their families?
