  6. Thesis Statement • In films, female athletes subvert traditional femininity and gender roles. However, they are not extremely masculine, and are still depicted as physically attractive, desirable to men, and/or fragile in order to gain greater viewership ...[to be continued]

  11. SUPPRESSING FEMININITY IN ORDER TO BOX • Contrasting characters: • Maggie emasculates “Danger”  contrast between “masculine” female and “feminine” male • Hilary Swank (smaller breasts and muscular arms) chosen for role  less feminine than “show ladies” and sisters in film

  12. Inability to suppress gentle nature, and treated by many as “a girl” • Behavior  imbues girlish nature • Hesitates to beat opponents in the face for fear of “disfiguring them” • Childish whims and behavior after winning

  13. Manager treating Maggie as a “girl” • Overprotective of Maggie, treats her like a little girl- “protect yourself at all times” • Manager regretted training her after she was paralyzed  “she’s just a girl” and he “should have known better”
