Why study film? • Feminist film theory
Thesis Statement • In films, female athletes subvert traditional femininity and gender roles. However, they are not extremely masculine, and are still depicted as physically attractive, desirable to men, and/or fragile in order to gain greater viewership ...[to be continued]
Million Dollar Baby 31 year-old, impoverished Maggie, and her manager Frankie
SUPPRESSING FEMININITY IN ORDER TO BOX • Contrasting characters: • Maggie emasculates “Danger” contrast between “masculine” female and “feminine” male • Hilary Swank (smaller breasts and muscular arms) chosen for role less feminine than “show ladies” and sisters in film
Inability to suppress gentle nature, and treated by many as “a girl” • Behavior imbues girlish nature • Hesitates to beat opponents in the face for fear of “disfiguring them” • Childish whims and behavior after winning
Manager treating Maggie as a “girl” • Overprotective of Maggie, treats her like a little girl- “protect yourself at all times” • Manager regretted training her after she was paralyzed “she’s just a girl” and he “should have known better”

Tomboy by nature, men by choice • Contrasting realms • Debutante ball (womanhood) vs Soccer (very strong themes) Violet refuses to go for former • Contrasting characters
Exaggerated gender transformation • Covert message: Females athletes are undergoing a major gendered transformation • Significance between twins Violet just as good as a male
Finally becoming a lady • Character development • Finally willing to attend debutante ceremony at end of film transition into womanhood • Make soccer seem like a passing phase • Feminine attraction
Traditional gender roles • For eg, ‘feminine’, ‘lady-like’, ‘well-mannered’
Possible implications • Adds no value to societal discourse • Gender neutral depiction • Such films want to appear neutral on the issue in order not to be controversial and maximize viewership
Thesis Statement (continued) • This conflict in portrayal distorts societal discourse because it confuses the role of these films in society and what they say regarding female athleticism • Layman may not understand bias of film, or conflict in portrayal
