  1. Welcome to Art!MrRuane 317

  2. Allow introductions! • Mr. Ruane • From Scranton and SHS grad. • 9 years in the classroom • I teach History and Art • Warrior Run SD 2 years, Phildaelphia SD 2 years Scranton SD 7 years (SHS, WSHS, South) • I love drawing, cartoons, comics, video games, toys, and trivia.

  3. Our YEAR in a nutshell • 6th – we meet 30 times – once on a six day cycle • Responsibility for getting, doing and putting work where belongs on you. • Assigned seats – gonna work it out for grade 6 since I don’t know you…yet. Week 2 or 3. It’s coming. • In class reading and questions from Scholastic Art • Videos (Art 21 series)

  4. Grade breakdown • 7 or 8 classes a quarter so… • Every day grades are: • Bell Ring 10%/ Class Participation 20% / Quiz 15% / HW 15% • 2 projects per quarter and one final and one midterm. 40% • ROUGHLY – 14 total points per class totaling 98ish, rounded to 100. • Each class you miss increase the value of every other class by 14%. So if you miss 2 classes the 5 remaining classes count for 20 points each, 3 classes missed – 25 points, etc. • This is a totally passable class that is here to help your GPA not add to bring it down.

  5. RULES and REGS “who’s bad?” • Respect goes both ways. • You give it, you will get it. It’s a guaranteed 100% return on your investment!

  6. It’s Art, I expect you to talk to each other while you work BUT… • Keep your voices normal. • When I’m instructing, I’m demonstrating, or we are watching a film, you are listening. • Keep your language clean.

  7. CELL PHONES • You can use them for reference • I must see the reference first and you need to tell me what you are looking for. • Nobody is “researching” a game of Fortnite

  8. General Room Things • You need a hall pass to leave for any reason. • One Boy or Girl at a time. • If you are excessively late without reason, you will be called down at the end of the day.

  9. When and If You are Late • DO YOUR BEST GET HERE ON TIME, we start if you are here or you are not. • If you are chronically late, it will reflect in your daily. • If you are late and stuff’s clearly going on, we don’t need a grand entrance

  10. Things that get you a write-up • FIGHTING • SLEEPING • BULLYING • DESTROYING THE ROOM

  11. About that whole “Destroying the room” I want it looking good when you leave. Stuff goes back where you got it. Cap your paint, replace your markers, throw NOTHING. 7th and 8th. Clean Your Paint Don’t take my stuff Or………………….

  12. Tidy Up • Normally, We will start packing up and cleaning 5 to the bell…more than enough time to pick up any mess you have around you. • Supplies are EXTREMELY expensive… everything goes back where you got it before you leave! • Be responsible…keep wet paint and inkworks on drying rack/back tables use drawers/shelves/slots/folders assigned to your period.

  13. BASICS FOR CLEANUP AND CLASS • CAP YOUR GLUE • DUMP DIRTY WATER and RINSE BRUSHES • PENCILS IN CONTAINORS NOT BOOKBAG • GARBAGE IN CAN LIKE SCRAPS AND LOOSE PRACTICE SHEETS • BRAND NEW PENS, PENCILS, SCISSORS are NOT GARBAGE (can you believe it???) • DON’T WASTE PAPER – PAPER in trash with ONE LINE on it, is not trash. • I TELL YOU TO TAKE ONE OF SOMETHING, you take how many? • NEVER THROW OUT YOUR SKETCHES OR FIRST DRAFTS. THAT IS PROOF YOU WORKED TODAY!

  14. A basic day in the life of 317 • Enter – get your stuff. Check Objectives on Board. There will be a “DO NOW” subject to draw for 5 MINUTES.**** “MR. R. what are we doing?” – UP ON THE BOARD! THAT’S WHAT! • Every day needs - Pens, pencils, materials, your small folders and LARGE TABLE FOLDERS • Lecture with quizzes. The quizzes are written. Expect many. Subjects are:Modernism, Surrealism, Printmaking, Painting Techniques, Mixing, Types of Drawing, Famous Artists • Clean up. I mark you for daily credit after all is said and done. If your table is a mess, you all lose half a days credit. If I know you took something, zero for the day.

  15. GRADE BREAK DOWN • 7 classes a quarter so… • Every day grades are: • Bellringer 10%/ Notes/Clean/Behavior 20%/ Homework 15%– Quizzes 15% every part gets a graded category • 2 projects per quarter and one final and one midterm. 50% • ROUGHLY - 14 total points per class totaling 99% - everyone gets a free 2%! (woo~hoo) • That last part is there to show, missing class greatly shrinks your chance to screw around…you mess up in 2 classes and you are making it nearly impossible to pass the quarter. • Like always, this is a totally passable class that is here to help your GPA not add to brining it down.

Separate the paper into five panels and do a design or text in the spaces between the panels. Can be totally basic stuff. Only one thing can be electronic related (tv, game, phone) You had roughly 70 days off so get to it.

  35. Homework • Draw your favorite animal for the next time we meet, on paper that’s not gross, half destroyed or made of receipt or napkin. You may color it too can be realistic or stylized. Extra.Credit • Stuff I would very, very, very much like you to get your hands on – Sooner than later. • A. Kneaded eraser, (these are in short supply and if you get your own I think you’d probably hang onto it better) • B. Sketchbook (you can never have too many…in art school, I’d have at least 5 going at once a year)
