  1. Set Scottish Text Questions minus 8 Mark

  2. Explain briefly how the poet establishes a happy mood. 2 marks • Look at the descriptions in lines 9-14 of the Chihuahua, the baby and the guitar. Choose any two of these and explain in detail how the poets use of language creates an effective description. 4 marks • In lines 15-22 the poet gives his thoughts about what he has just seen. In your own words, explain what he says. 4 marks • Describe the poet’s mood in the final stanza (lines 23-27).

  3. Choose two answers and then put into own words. Two brief explanations for one mark each. • “Christmas lights” – right, cheerful, associated with festivity etc. • “The three of them laughing” – everyone is in a good mood, high spirits • “The cloud of happiness” – their breath is associated with joy, the joy is overwhelming, surrounds/envelopes them. • “wait till he sees this but” – sense of anticipation/ excitement of things to come.

  4. Quote and explain (identifying technique where possible). For each choice one mark for basic comment and two marks for more sophisticated. The Chihuahua • Cute, appealing, vulnerable (tiny) • Colourful, perhaps dignified (Royal Stewart Tartan) • A little ridiculous, incongruous (coat like a teapot-holder)

  5. The baby • Clean, pure, innocent (“white shawl”) • Radiant, alert (“all bright eyes”) • Like a good luck charm (“mouth like favours”) • Sweet, appealing, nourishing (“in a fresh sweet cake”)
