Library: Open on Saturdays. Problem. The problem we are facing is that the Library is not open on the weekends, and is not available to students who play sports and other after school activities. This problem affects the whole society: seniors citizens, children, and adults.

  1. Library: Open on Saturdays

  2. Problem The problem we are facing is that the Library is not open on the weekends, and is not available to students who play sports and other after school activities. This problem affects the whole society: seniors citizens, children, and adults. Every child has used the library once or twice. The whole town is affected by this issue. This should be handled by the government because they would have to fund for the library to be open more hours. There is no public policy for dealing with the problem. This was because it was not implemented.

  3. Problem (cont.) The library workers do not want to work on Saturdays and they have stated that they do not have enough staff. The library needs more volunteers to work there to reduce the cost of running it. Our first selectman Larry Groh, Board of Trustees, and there was about a 100 person petition have appealed this issue. Their interest is to open the Thompson Public Library on Saturdays and this would affect many people. There was about a 100 person petition signed and two letters written to the library regarding hours.

  4. Problem (cont.) The advantages of our position is that the library knows that people are interested on opening on Saturdays. The disadvantages are that the library has not done anything about it and the problem has not been resolved. Citizens are trying to influence government by getting the library annoyed and then they may open on Saturdays. This is the local governments problem. They are responsible for resolving this problem.

Survey We as a group asked the young adults at Tourtellotte if they would take a survey on this and this is the questions we asked: 1- Are you a student in need of a computer(for educational purposes) on Saturdays? (Yes or No) 2- Do you access the library? (Yes or No) 3- Is it more convenient to access the library during the week vs. the weekend? (Yes or No) 4- Would you like the library open on Saturday? (Yes or No) 5- Would you use the library if it was open on Saturdays? (Yes or No) The next page shows the results!!
