2. Join Us for an Incredible Journey • Each fall, monarch butterflies from New Jersey begin a 2,000 mile migration to Mexico. The following spring, their great grandchildren return to New Jersey. This summer, an exciting opportunity for teachers is returning to the New York City area. • The powerful story of the monarch butterfly inspired the emergence of the Monarch Teacher Network in 2001 and its affiliate Monarch Teacher Network-Canada in 2003. • 'Teaching and Learning With Monarch Butterflies' is a three-day teacher workshop combining classroom and field experiences. It enables pre-K to grade 8 teachers to teach essential skills in literacy, math, science, the arts, geography, technology, Spanish and social studies… through the captivating story of monarchs. • Workshops are taught by a team of experienced educators from New Jersey, Virginia, Ohio, Connecticut and Canada. Participants are provided with the knowledge, skills, materials and confidence to raise monarchs in the classroom and create an outstanding learning experience for their students. 3. Teachers from across North America learned about the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly by witnessing it first hand…

4. We welcomed monarch butterflies to the world!

5. From egg to butterfly, We investigated the stages of a Monarchs’ incredible life.

6. “When one tugs at a single thread of nature. he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”~John Muir

7. We learned how to feed adult butterflies should their release be delayed by inclement weather….

8. And we learned how to release them into the bright sunshine . A little juicy juice on your nose will keep them with you long enough for a picture!

10. But some( like this boy) were impatient to be free!

11. We searched the underside of Milkweed leaves in the butterfly garden for eggs…

12. And found over 100!! Our garden was made possible by a grant from the Bergen Community College Center for the Study of Intercultural Understanding

13. We created rearing enclosures for Monarch caterpillars and butterflies.

14. We learned how to tag adults to help scientists track their fall migration to Mexico.

15. Teachers taking this workshop will get the opportunity to join the Monarch Teacher Network on a winter visit to the sanctuaries and schools in Mexico. Two Child Development Center teachers have already made the trip thanks to a grant from the Bergen Community College Center for the Study of Intercultural Understanding.
