    6. THE VICTIMS OCCUPATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS Taxicab drivers Cashiers Sales and administrative workers Managers and professionals Police and detectives Direct contact with the public Exchange of money Having the authority to terminate an employee Dealing with violent people or situations

    8. COMMON CHARACTERISTICS Fascination with the military, or being a survivalist Over age 35 A loner or an extremist Carries a grudge Has difficulty accepting authority or reality May have substance abuse or mental health problem

    9. WARNING SIGNS Dramatic behavior or personality change Chronically disgruntled Makes intimidating threats or allusion to violence

RECOMMENDATIONS HOW MANAGEMENT SHOULD HAVE HANDLED THE PROBLEM Terminations/forced resignation should be handled at the management level If management chooses to have supervisor handle situation, provide complete support Provide employees with information and training on workplace violence Implement effective security measures Enforce “zero tolerance” policy
