What is an Adverb? • An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Although they may modify adjectives and other adverbs, they generally modify verbs.
Using Adverbs that Modify Verbs • Adverbs that modify verbs will answer one of these four questions: • Where? • When? • In what way? • To what extent?
Negatives • Negative adverbs, such as not, never, and nowhere, also modify verbs. • Examples: • Mark never arrived at the meeting. • She could not understand the essay. • The line of questioning led nowhere.
Using Adverbs the Modify Adjectives • When adverbs modify adjectives or adverbs, they answer the question To what extent? Adverbs that Modify Adjectives • Example: • Beaches can be very beautiful. • The speaker is extremely tall.
Adverbs Modifying Other Adverbs • When adverbs modify other adverbs, they again answer the question To what extent? Adverbs that Modify Adverbs • Example: • Polar bears are hardly ever seen in this part of the park. • When driving, I tire too quickly.
Finding Adverbs in Sentences • Adverbs can be found in different places in sentences. • Conjunctive adverbs are adverbs that join independent clauses. • Location of adverbs are on the next slide.
Adverb or Adjective? • If a noun or pronoun is modified by a word, that modifying word is an adjective. If a verb, adjective, or adverb is modified by a word, that modifying word is an adverb. • An adjective will modify a noun or pronoun and will answer the questions What kind? Which one? How many? or How much? • An adverb will modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb and will answer one of the questions Where? When? In what way? or To what extent?
The –ly Factor • While most words ending in –ly are adverbs, some are not. • Several adjectives also end in –ly. These adjectives are formed by adding –ly to nouns. • Examples: • I like movies, but I prefer a weekly show. • Kodie is different because he is a cuddly puppy.
