Food for Thought • There should be many ways for people to connect with your organization – not everyone belongs on your board. • Board members want to do things – and right away – they don’t want to be butt members – that is, their butt in a seat once a month. • Behind every great board is a great executive director. That said - it is the Board Chair’s responsibility to lead and manage the Board.
Issue: Board Role • Differentiated from Staff • Fund Raising • Giving and Getting • Committee Structure and Membership
Issue: Board Development • Who is responsible • How it is structured • Recruitment • Orientation and Training • Cycle
Issue: Board Performance • Responsibility • Criteria • Engagement • Appraisal
Set Up for Success • Board Responsible • Strategic Plan • Annual Calendar • Board’s Work Plan • Board Chair Responsibilities • Clear performance criteria • Board and member appraisal • Role clarity with CEO and staff
ENGAGEMENT • Annual plan for each member • Member contract formalized and reviewed • Engagement survey annually • Commitment not focused on giving/fundraising • Peer to peer • Recognition and thanks • BOD -discussion meetings/consent agendas
BBM* • Not attending Board Meetings • Butt Board Members – retired on the job • Commitments: Ignoring financial requirements – giving and getting • MIA • Firing Board Members – why and how * Bad Board Members
