Early Life • Gary Paulsen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 17th, 1939 • His early life was shaped by World War II: • His father was sent to Europe to fight in the war, and his mother had to move them to Chicago, where she found work at a munitions factory. • When he was seven years old, he witnessed a plane crash into the sea. ( in Hatchet a plane crashes)

Adult Life • Gary had many jobs including being a teacher, solider, farmer, trapper, pro. archer and a singer! • In 1966, he began to write and has wrote over a hundred books since, fiction and nonfiction! • Gary Paulsen also liked sled dog races and took part in a 1,200 mile sled race called the Iditarod in 1983, and again in 1985. Then he discovered that he had a serious heart disease, which stopped him from a third attempt

  4. Other Books • Gary Paulsen has written over a hundred books, though the most popular—and his favorite—is Hatchet. Some of his other famous books are Lawn Boy and the Brian series. • His first book was called “The Special War”, a nonfiction book. • He has gotten over 50 awards for his many books.
