  2. Typography • Typography-The design, arrangement, style, and appearance of type • Font: a complete set of characters and spacing of one size of type.

  4. Typographic terminology • Readability: In typography and any written text, the degree to which it is legible. In any text, very rarely is the need to convey a style more important than it is to communicate its meaning. Although lettering should be attractive, readability is usually the most important factor in its design.

  5. Terminology • Majuscule Letter-Capital Letters • Miniscule Letter- Lower case letters • Serif: A short stroke or fine linefinishing off the main strokes of a letter • Sans- without • (hence sans serif)

  6. Terminology Ascender: is the portion of a minusculeletter that extends above the mean line of a font. That is, the part of a lower-case letter that is taller than the font's x-height. Descender: is the portion of a letter in a Latin alphabet that extends below the baseline of a font.

  7. Terminology • ligature - In calligraphy and typography, two or more letters joined together to create a single character.

  8. Terminology • In typography, a counter or aperture is an area entirely or partially enclosed by a letter form or a symbol Letters containing closed counters include A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, a, b, d, e, g, o, p, and q. Letters containing open counters include c, f, h, i, s etc. The digits 0, 4, 6, 8, and 9 also possess a counter.

  9. Terminology • Diacritical mark: is an ancillary glyph added to a letter. • Examples of diacritical marks: È Ø Ñ à Ĩ ö • Dingbat: (who knew it was a real thing?! Not me!) an ornament, character or spacer used in typesetting, sometimes more formally known as a "printer's ornament" or "printer's character".
