What you will learn • Before first exam • Learning/memory, conditioning, decision making, basic experimentation • Before second exam • Biological bases of mental function, intro to psychiatry • Before third exam • Human sexuality, some psychiatry, neuropsychology, development from birth to death

  3. Behavioral Science is broad • Behavioral Science will cover biology, social psychology, psychiatry, & cognition • also a number of other things • Don’t be overly concerned by the broad number of topics • Think “How does this relate to treating a patient?” • This will help you better remember the material too!

  4. Why is this important? • Okay, you’ve got 8 other classes • You’ll have to interact with patients • You’ll have to read medical journals • You’ll have to take a sexual history • You’ll have to treat patients from birth to death • And, you’ll have to take neuroscience in the spring

  5. What’s expected? • Come to class • Not a requirement -- a darned good idea • Review the handouts • All material on the exam is in your handouts • Pass the exams with a 60% or better • “O” typically is 90 or better.

  6. The textbook • Fadem, Barbara. (2000). Board Review Series: Behavioral Science. 296pp. • Buy it now. You’ll be glad you have it. • (Available on amazon.com)

  7. Where to get your lecture notes • Lecture notes • TA reviews • Late-breaking announcements • Cool graphics • Other interesting bits of information • All are found on the Behavioral Science M1 page at www.med.uiuc.edu!

  8. How to print out your lectures • Go to the M1 page at www.med.uiuc.edu • Click on Behavioral Science • Click on the blue text that says “Powerpoint slides here” • Must be on a lab computer to do this! • Hit control + P to print • Under “print what” select handouts

  9. Questions? • Psychology 100 textbook on reserve • TA office hours are on Thursdays at 6pm • but will be moved according to Mike’s call! • E-mail the TA at mwilson@psych.uiuc.edu • E-mail your professors (their e-mails are on the course syllabus) • Don’t forget the exam reviews!
