ECAL Shift Duty: A Beginners Guide By Pourus Mehta
Types of Shifts • Sub-detector Shifts for ECAL, RPC, HCAL, Tracker, Castor & Pixels • Central Shifts: DQM, DAQ, DCS & Trigger • Expert On-Call Shifts • Pre-requisites for ECAL Sub-detector Shifts • Requirement to take Safety Courses Levels (1, 2, 3 & 4C) for access to CMS- CR & CMS-USC • Need to Study Shift Tutorial • Training Shifts to be taken • Subscription for Shifts through Shift Selection tool
Shifters Duties • Read the Run Field Manager’s Current Plan • Fill the Run Checklist for every run (Run Time > 15 Minutes) • Write an E-Log for any problems or crashes • Monitoring FED Status for all FEDs participating in Global Run • Monitor Central DQM & ECAL DQM for Status of various Parameters • Monitor Beam Status and give feedback to LHC-CR • Take Local Runs incase ECAL (EB + EE) or Preshower (ES) fails • Write Shift Summary • In rare cases, Take control of DCS from central DCS
Run Check-list Plots • Summary Plots • Event Types • Data integrity • FED status • Data occupancy & Data timing • Trigger occupancy & Trigger timing • FED event size • Selective Readout occupancy • Calibration sequence quality • Calibration sequence occupancy (EB & EE) • Laser amplitude & timing • LED amplitude & timing (EE) • Laser fast check • MEM occupancy & integrity • LED system
