  2. How the States got their Shapes • Introduction to Texas: The following video clip outlines the formation of Texas and its modern attitudes and views • Episode: State of Rebellion • Chapter: Lone Star- 25:00-31:00

Tejanos • In 1821, only about 4,000 Tejanos lived in Texas. • Tejanos are people of Spanish heritage who consider Texas their home. • The Spanish government tried to attract Spanish setters to Texas, but very few came. • Sparse population convinces the Spanish to invite American Settlers to Texas

  4. The Texas Revolt A. Permission to settle:  Starting in 1821, Spain and then an Independent Mexico had granted permission to Catholic (North) Americans to settle the sparsely populated territory of Texas.  B. Incentives for settlement: Soon there was a great influx of Americans settlers into Texas. The land was practically free--only 10¢ an acre as opposed to $1.25 an acre for inferior land in the U.S. Each male colonists over twenty-one years of age was allowed to purchase 640 acres for himself, 320 acres for his wife, 160 acres for each child and, significantly, an additional 80 acres for each slaves that he brought with him. The numerical dominance of the American settlers: 1827: By 1827 there were some 12,000 United States citizens living in Texas, while there were only 7,000 Mexicans. 1835: By 1835 the immigrant population had reached 30,000, while the Mexican population had barely passed 7,800

Many American settlers moved to Texas after Mexico achieved independence from Spain. • Mexico gained independence in 1821. • The new Mexican government hired empresarios, or agents, to bring settlers to Texas. • Empresarios given land grants as compensation. • Stephen Austin started a colony on lower the Colorado River in 1822. • Success attracted more American settlers, who received free land in exchange for obeying Mexican laws. • Concerned about the number of Americans, Mexico banned further settlement. General Antonio López de Santa Anna became the ruler of Mexico.

Texans revolted against Mexican rule and established an independent nation. • War began October 1835 in a battle at Gonzales, Texas. • Texans declared independence on March 2, 1836. • The Republic of Texas was established. • Sam Houston: • Grew up in the mountains of Tennessee. Where he served in the US military during the War of 1812. • After a short time, he became a lawyer and practiced in Lebanon, TN before running for public office and was elected to the US Congress in 1823 and in 1825. • In 1827, Houston was elected Governor of Tennessee by a large majority. • After being governor, Houston resigned from TN politics and returned to live with his longtime friends, the Cherokees. There, he remained until 1832 when he moved to Texas and was named head of the Texas army. • Influential settler, Stephen Austin went to the United States for money and troops.

Rising Tensions in Texas • In 1829, the Mexican government outlawed slavery. • Same year- Immigration closed off to US • The settlers wanted to keep their slaves so they could grow cotton. • The Americans also didn’t want to learn Spanish or follow Mexican laws. • Very few settlers had converted to Catholicism (condition of living in Mexico). • Texans had to start paying taxes for the first time. • Mexican president, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna sent more Mexican troops to Texas. • Texans began talk of breaking away from Mexico. • When Stephen Austin was jailed, the Texans did revolt.

Texans Revolt Against Mexico • In 1833, Austin set off for Mexico City with a petition listing all the reforms supported by both Americans and Tejanos. • In Mexico City, the Mexican president, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna learned of a letter Austin had written that threatened a rebellion if Santa Anna didn’t approve of his petition.

  11. The Alamo • The first battle between the Texans and Mexicans took place at on old mission that was used as a fort. • It was called the Alamo.

The Fight for the Alamo • There were only 183 Texans guarding the Alamo. • The Mexican army had 1,800-5000 men. • The Texans held the Alamo for twelve days. • On the thirteenth day, Santa Anna ordered his men to storm the fortress. • When it was over, all but five Texans were dead. The men not killed in the battle were executed by Santa Anna. • Texans were shocked by the slaughter at the Alamo and vowed to fight for their freedom.

Lone Star Republic • In September 1836, Texans raised a flag with a single star. • Sam Houston was elected president of the Lone Star Republic. • The Texas government asked Congress to annex Texas, but Congress vetoed the annexation because it worried about the slavery issue and about another war with Mexico. • President Tyler eventually gets Annexation approved in 1845 • Mexico Furious that US takes over Texas
