The Prohibition • As a result of the Temperance Movement, The Prohibition occurred • The Prohibition was the time period when the sale and possession of alcohol was illegal in the United States
The Prohibition • It lasted from 1920 to 1933 • The Prohibition Act or the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution was also called the Volstead Act, after the man who wrote the law
Effects of the Prohibition • Organized Crime- Groups of criminals gathered to produce and sell alcohol without the consent of the government • Speakeasys- Buildings and secret restaurants that served alcohol to patrons • Economic Decline- Bars, Restaurants, and Breweries closed because of the Prohibition. Many of them did not reopen after it was repealed
Who Sold Alcohol? • Places that sold alcohol were known as speakeasys. • Crime bosses led organized crime in many major cities
Al Capone • Huge crime boss in Chicago, Illinois. Although he was selling alcohol, which was against the law, he felt that he was simply doing what the people wanted and considered himself a hero.
