How do I know if I am pregnant? Signs of pregnancy: • Missing menstrual period • This can also be for other reasons such as increased stress levels • Pregnancy tests • These tests detect the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) in the urine • hCG is produced by the developing embryo and is present is a woman’s urine only when she is pregnant
Stages of Development 1) Ovulation 2) Fertilization 3) Cell division 4) Implantation in the uterus 5) Placenta and Amniotic Sac formation (10-14 days) 6) Gestation
1) Ovulation • release of a mature ovum from a follicle (in the ovary) into the fallopian tube • occurs on day 14 of menstrual cycle
2) Fertilization • Occurs in the fallopian tubes • Union of ovum and sperm • The fertilized egg is called azygote(has a complete set of genetic material- 46 chromosomes)
3) Cell Division (cleavage) • As the zygote travels through the fallopian tube towards the uterus it undergoes a series of cell divisions. • When it reaches the uterus it has become a clump of about 16 cells (4 cell divisions) • this clump of cells is called the blastocyst
4) Implantation of blastocyst • Once at the uterus the blastocyst will settle into the endometrial lining where it will begin to grow • The growing blastocyst is now called an embryo
5) Day 10-14 • development of the amniotic sac: • contains the developing embryo + amniotic fluid: • protects the embryo from shock • development of the placenta: • carries oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the fetus through the umbilical cord
6) Gestation • The time between fertilization and birth is called gestation. • Gestation is divided into 3 trimesters • each trimester lasts about 3 months • several major changes occur during each trimester
First Trimester: (week 1- week 13) • Week 1- 7: “Embryo” • Week 8: “Fetus” • Week 12: • Sex of fetus can be determined • The fetus can move
Second Trimester: (week 14- week 26) • Week 20: • Fetus can hear sounds • Can suck it’s thumb • Hair begins to grow • Use it’s digestive system by swallowing amniotic fluid • Week 24: • Mother can feel the baby moving (kicks from the legs)
Third Trimester: (week 27 – week 40) • Rapid development of the fetus which requires a large quantity of nutrients from the mother it’s crucial for the mother to eat a healthy diet • Week 28: Fetus can open it’s eyes • Week 32: fetus settles into a head down position in preparation for birth • Week 36: Recognizes mother’s voice
