History April 21, 1864-June 14, 1920. Born in Erfurt, Prussia (present day Germany).
Influenceon Sociology • Wide variety of social topics • Sociology of religion • Influence on structural functionalism, critical theory, some of the social interaction approaches, and much contemporary sociological theory
What influenced them? • Similar scope to that of Marx and he came from a similar historical, German tradition of thought • German Idealism and particularly neo-Kantianism--influenced his world view. Especially important to Weber's work is the neo-Kantian belief that reality is essentially chaotic and incomprehensible
Theory • Multidimensional theory of stratification – incorporated class, statues, and party • Ideal types of legitimate domination or authority – rational-legal authority (rules and laws), traditional authority (exercised practices and traditions), Charismatic authority (extraordinary power of a leader), • Theory of rationalization - the replacement of traditions, values, and emotions as motivators for behavior in society with rational, calculated ones
Major Studies • Thought religious and ethical issues were important when analyzing society • Along with Durkheim he created the field of sociology of religion – investigated how religion interacted with social, cultural, and economic factors to create unique social situations • Analyzed historical events using sociological concepts.
