  2. Stem-changing verbs • In the present indicative, the last vowel of the stem of certain verbs changes from e to ie, from o to ue, or from e to i when stressed. This change affects all singular forms and the third person plural form. The first and second person plural forms (nosotros and vosotros) are regular because the stress falls on the ending, not on the stem.

  3. Stem-changing verbs are indicated in this text with the specific change written in parentheses after the infinitive: pensar (ie), recorder (ue), pedir (i).

  4. The following are frequently used stem-changing verbs.

  5. The verbs adquirir (to acquire), jugar (to play), and oler (to smell) are conjugated like stem-changing verbs.

Verbs with Spelling Changes and Irregular Verbs • Some verbs require a spelling change to maintain the pronunciation of the stem. • Verbs ending in –ger or –gir change g to j in the first person singular. dirigir dirijo, diriges, dirige, dirigimos, dirigís, dirigen proteger protejo, proteges, protégé, protegemos, protegéis, protegen • Other –ger or –gir verbs: • Corregir (i) • Coger • Elegir • Recoger • exigir

  8. Verbs ending in –guir change gu to g in the first person singular • Verbs ending in –cer or –cir preceded by a consonant, change c to z in the first person singular.

  9. Verbs ending in –uir change i to y before o and e • Some verbs ending in –iar and –uar change the i to í and the u to ú in all forms except nosotros

  11. The following verbs have an irregular first person singular form only • Derived verbs show the same irregularities: • Hacer : deshacer, rehacer,satisfacer • Poner: componer,imponer,oponer,proponer,exponer • Traer: atraer, contraer,distraer(se) • Caer: caigo
