  1. All About Clouds Jordan Bradfield CFI-I Dec. 8, 2009

  2. Intended Learning Outcome • By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to correctly identify clouds that are presented to them as well as in the actual environment.

  3. Pre-Test • How is cloud type determined? • Height of their bases • With or without precipitation • Color shade

  4. 2. How many types of clouds are there? A. 5 B. 1 C. 7 D. 4

  5. 3. What cloud is generally associated with a thunderstorm? A. Low B. Middle C. High D. Cloud with vertical development

  6. Why are Clouds Important? • Understanding the different types of clouds is important in the safety of every flight. • “Clouds are visible indicators and are also indicative of future weather.” (PHAK 11-15) • Could decide whether you embark on your flight or not. • http://www.aopa.org/asf/epilot_acc/atl03la094.html

  7. Cloud Types • Classified based on height • Low • Middle • High • Vertical Development

  8. Classifications (appearance and composition) • Cumulus- cotton balls • Stratus- layered • Cirrus- fibrous, wispy • Nimbus- rain-bearing • Lenticular- lens shaped

  9. Composition • Low Clouds- water droplets, supercooled droplets • Middle Clouds- water, ice crystals, supercooled droplets • High Clouds- ice crystals • Vertical Development- contain all types

  10. Clouds with Vertical Development • Indicate an unstable atmosphere • Can produce lightning, hail, tornadoes, gusty winds, and wind shear • Very turbulent • Extremely hazardous

  11. Closing • Clouds can indicate imminent weather conditions and must be considered before every flight. • Clouds with vertical development are the most hazardous and produce intense weather phenomena. • Any Questions??

  12. Post Test • How is cloud type determined? • Height of their bases • With or without precipitation • Color shade

  13. 2. How many types of clouds are there? A. 5 B. 1 C. 7 D. 4
