  8. Where to start 6. Write a grant: Goal:To create an engaging learning environment for students by integrating biotechnology into the current life science curriculum. Objectives:Students will be able to: • Explain the structure and function of DNA. • Explain the role of biotechnology in today’s world. • Create and maintain an outdoor garden to observe agricultural biotechnological advances and the nature of science. • Develop computer research skills as students examine the history of biotechnology as well as arguments related to the Pros and Cons of biotechnology. • Properly examine microorganisms under the microscope. • Develop laboratory skills in electrophoresis and micropipette usage.

Benefits of the grant • This Biotechnology Grant will supply my students with the following inquiry materials: • Laptop computers • Garden tools/raised garden building supplies • Microscope slides of Bacteria, Protists, and Fungi and storage unit • Lab Kits • Genetically Modified Soybean Kits • Yeast Observation Kits • Oil Eating Bacteria Kits • DNA Extraction Kits (with micropipette)

How will the grant help? • Increase scientific inquiry in the classroom. • Give my students the opportunity to examine the history of biotechnology as well as current biotechnological advances using technology. • Give me the lab supplies to introduce biotechnology to students in my school. • Provide resources to assist in the development of a biotech program to be used by other middle school teachers in the Northwest Missouri area in conjunction with the Missouri Biotechnology Association (MOBIO) portable lab. The Excellence in Biotechnology Grant will:
