CWMA Conference March 30, 2007 Will Burrows
Did you say “Wood”? Play (videos removed for downloadable version)
What to do with the wood? • Previous disposal methods were not sustainable • CVRD and RDN enacted WSML bylaw • First facility issued a licence
Who are Selkirk Recycling? • We are the new entity resulting from a merger of Budget Steel and Harper’s Recycling. • We are “The largest recyclers of metals and wood on Vancouver Island”
What do we do? • We convert low value wastes into higher value products • Loads are dumped on a paved tipping area and graded • Larger items are removed by an excavator
What do we do? continued • Trommel screen removes fines to aid further sorting • Sort line team manually pick undesirable non wood product (rock, metal, roofing, plastic, garbage) • Wood product is stockpiled for further processing
What do we do? continued • Finished wood product ground in tub grinder and used as boiler fuel
What do we do? continued Pre-sort and trommel screen Picking Station Tub grinding
Recovered non-wood materials sent to recyclers What happens to the products? Metals Rock Asphalt roofing
Fines to landfill as daily cover What happens to the products?
Finished product used as boiler fuel What happens to the products?
What the future holds? • Closure of coastal sawmills has resulted in a shortage of hog fuel • Cost of fossil fuels continues to increase • Cost to landfill continues to increase • More open burning bylaws being introduced • Increased residential development
Barriers to expansion • Municipalities that continue to accept and landfill wood waste • “Fly-by-night” operators • Public awareness and acceptance of alternative fuels • A lack of industrially zoned land on which to operate recycling facilities
