The Importance of Fonts • Fonts make or break your document • The right font will make your document more readable • The wrong font will be hard to read • Don’t overuse fonts – stick to between one and three
Changing Font • Select the text you want to change • Change the font style on the Home menu • Type • Size • Colour • Bold, underline, italics • Character spacing
Preset Styles • Choose a style from the Style menu • Normal: regular text • Headings: for titles and headings • Emphasis: makes text stand out • And more!
Serif & Sans Serif • This is typed in a serif font, Times New Roman • It’s got fancy “hooks and feet” • This is typed in Calibri, a sans serif font • It is written with straight lines • There are no fancy “hooks and feet” on it
Script Fonts • Used more as a “special effect” • Use script fonts SPARINGLY • They can be hard to read!
Font Size • Measured in points • pt for short • Pick a size from the drop-down list • Or, type in a specific number • Could be 1, 500, or anything!
Advanced Font Options • Click Font and you will go to the Font Dialogue Box • You can apply special effects like shadow, outline, emboss, engrave, etc. • Play around and have fun
Applying Bold, Italics, and Underline • Select the text, and then click either B, I, or U • Shortcuts save time: • CTRL + B for bold text • CTRL + I for italics • CTRL + U for underlined text
Do not underline the end punctuation, such as periods and colons • Punctuation in the middle of an underlined section does get underlined, e.g. • The first period gets underlined. The last period is not.
Format Painter • On the Home menu • Looks like a paint brush • Copies one font style and applies it somewhere else • To use: • Click anywhere on the text you want to copy the style of • Click the Format Painter • Once to use it once • Twice to use it more than once
