Breakthrough Recovery Outreach (“B.R.O.”) • Started contract in Fall 2012 • 2 Groups/week 1. Adolescents and Young Adults (~14-20 yrs) 2. Older Adults (~20+ years) - Documentation for each client • Treatment Team (2 hours/week)
Co-Morbidity of Psychiatric Disorders & Addictive Diseases • 37% of alcohol abusers and 53% of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness • Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29% abuse either alcohol or drugs (http://www.thetreatmentcenter.com/dual-diagnosis-treatment)

Typical MT Group Goals • Self and Emotional Expression • Coping Skills • Communication (verbal & non-verbal) • Group Cohesion • Stress Reduction/Relaxation • Anger Management • Sense of autonomy
Intervention #1: Group Mural • TX Goals: group dynamics, ownership, encourages participation, positive outlet • Sets clients up for success • Combines the creative arts (music, art, expression) • Materials Needed: Whiteboard or roll of paper, markers, iPod docking station/CD player
Intervention #2: Group Songwriting • TX Goals: ownership, empowerment, addresses self-esteem and self-expression, group dynamics • Something tangible to cling to during treatment • Serves as an outlet for their creativity • Materials Needed: Guitar and/or keyboard, asst of percussion instruments, paper and pens or whiteboard
Songwriting Process • Come up with song topic (may need some direction) • Define a starting point and ending point for structure • Let group take over while facilitating when needed • Establish musical “feel” • Play a few chord progressions for them to choose • A client starts a melody or you start it for them OR rap with no melody *If time allows, you can record!
Intervention #3: Relaxation • Progressive Muscle Relaxation • TX Goals: stress and anxiety reduction, self awareness, coping skills • Materials Needed: PMR Script, iPod & Docking Station
