What is First-Generation? • Any student whose supporting parents do not hold a 4-year, bachelor’s degree.
Academic Responsibilities • High school vs. College • Increased academic rigor • Responsibility & accountability • Time availability • Less time in class • More time preparing & studying outside of class
High Risk Majors & Courses • Majors: “STEM” • Science, technology, engineering, & mathematics • Examples: biology, nursing, geosciences, radiologic technology, etc. • Courses: • BIOL 2010/2011 (Anatomy &Physiology) • MATH 1530 (Statistics)
Finances and College • Managing finances • Selecting cost-effective options (e.g. residence hall & meal plan choices) • Additional college expenses • Determining needs vs. wants • Financial aid • Submit FAFSA early! JANURARY 1!!! • Household income information • Apply for scholarships • Minimize student loan debt • Financial aid limits
Supporting Locally • Minimize additional responsibilities • Create study environment • Support campus engagement
