Current situation Positive: + EUSBSR / PA Tourism and FPs + Annual Baltic Sea Tourism Fora (last: Sopot / PL, 17,-18.05.11) + Efforts for developing a common identity, BSR branding + many good initiatives and good examples but: - term „sustainability“ not popular among tourism professionals Greifswald University, Betina Meliss – Policy Recommendations Tourism

In Preparation: Manual on sustainable tourism in the Baltic Sea, including  sets of indicators for various types of tourism  based on Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (Tourism Sustainability Council) Idea behind:  make it tangible and user-friendly for actors involved in tourism businesses  concrete recommendations for actions and improvements.  involve European and BSR wide umbrella organisations Greifswald University, Betina Meliss – Policy Recommendations Tourism

Policy recommendations I • Focus of future activities on making the existing tourism more sustainable instead of branding new forms of tourism, • Developing a common identity in the BSR is a long-lasting process and should be a common agenda for the future; • Political support for the annual Baltic Sea Tourism Forum (CBSS); • Support for sustainable rural tourism development for regional development where ever it is possible; • Transfer of new technologies, awareness raising and educational trainings to support tourism SMEs; Greifswald University, Betina Meliss – Policy Recommendations Tourism

  7. Policy recommendations II • Promotion and enhancement of transnational cooperation between the tourism business stakeholders; • Fair salaries for employees in the tourism sector as an important aspect contributing to sustainability in tourism. This should also address seasonal fluctuations; • Demographic shift of ageing population should be taken into account in order to improve sustainability in tourism (possible cooperation with VASAB, UBC); • Apply innovations and new technologies in tourism business; • Enhanced cooperation with other sectors, such as transport, as there are many cross-linkages, common goals and possibilities for action to enhance sustainability.
