  3. 10 Tips adapted from Stephanie Speisman • Keep in mind that networking is about being genuine • Ask yourself what your goals are in participating in networking meetings • Visit as many groups as possible that spark your interest. • Hold volunteer positions in organizations. • Ask open-ended questions in networking conversations.

  4. 10 Tips • Become known as a powerful resource for others. • Have a clear understanding of what you do and why, for whom, and what makes your doing it special • Be able to articulate what you are looking for and how others may help you. • Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given. • Call those you meet who may benefit from what you do and vice versa.

  5. Working the Room • Show up early • Smile and make eye contact • Limit talk • Have pockets • Process cards quickly • Dress with distinction • Offer genuine help • Train yourself

  10. Livonia Chamber of Commerce • Leadership class-encourage community volunteerism • Working at event • Community Opportunity Center • Lobbying-increase voice with state government

EMU-Livonia-Community Colleges • Develop relationship with admissions transfer representative • Offer to help at events • Learn about main college-academic advising classes, events on campus, • Community Colleges are requesting visits to EMU-Livonia, asking for more programs offered at site, call direct

  12. EMU-Detroit Advisory Board • 16 months of networking • Contacts gathered from multiple outreach activities: • Chamber of Commerce events • Crain’s Detroit Business • YMCA partnership • Staff and tenant-neighbors connections

Detroit YMCA College Coalition • Comprised of 2 yr & 4 yr Michigan based institutes of higher learning and a major health care provider. • Programming for 8-12 grade, Detroit area students • Goal is to promote and increase admission to institutes of higher learning • “Return on Investment” for EMU has been a minimum of 4-6 freshmen admits, annually for the past four years as well as providing further connections for 2 of the EMU-Detroit board members and for other areas on main campus-admissions, non-credit, College of Education.
