1. Doing Homework Problems in Moodle • Moodle is a courseware tool like BlackBoard which offers us a more useful type question, called a Cloze question. • A Cloze question allows us to ask a multiple answer question, with each of the answers embedded in either a fill-in-the-blank textbox or a drop-down menu of choices. • Moodle allows partial credit for multiple answer questions. BlackBoard does not – you either get all parts of a question correct in BlackBoard or you receive 0 credit. • Moodle is not officially supported by the University, though there are a number of users in the University community. • Moodle is run from a special server that requires a separate login. • This is the second time I have used Moodle and we never had any problems with its availability or usage.

2. To access the homework problems, type in this address or click on the Link to homework problems on the Course Materials page in the course BlackBoard site. Click on the link for SW388R6: Data Analysis and Computers I (Fall, 2008)

3. I have created an initial account for you that uses your eid as both the username and the password. Type your eid in both textboxes and click on the Login button. 10/14/2014 Slide 3

4. When you login the first time, Moodle will require you to change your password.. Type in your current password and a new password, and click on the Save Changes button. 10/14/2014 Slide 4

5. Moodle will tell you if you are successful in changing your password. Click on the Continue button. 10/14/2014 Slide 5

6. Moodle will ask you to verify that you want to enroll in this course Click on the Yes button. 10/14/2014 Slide 6

7. On the next screen, you will see the list of homework assignments. Click on the link for the first one: Level of Measurement. 10/14/2014 Slide 7

8. For this assignment, as well as all others, you may repeat the assignment and your recorded grade will be the highest grade for any attempt. To begin the assignment, click on the Attempt quiz now button. 10/14/2014 Slide 8

9. The number at the beginning of the problem statement, e.g. 003, is my numbering scheme for the problem. If you ask a question about a homework question, be sure to include this number. Each assignment contains a random selection of questions from a test bank. To answer questions, you either select an item from the drop-down menu, or type a number in a textbox. Questions can be answered na if they are not applicable to what the problem is about. For each problem set, I will tell you when to use na. It is not used in the Level of Measurement assignment. 10/14/2014 Slide 9

10. When you have finished entering the answers for a question, you click on the Submit button to have it graded. Note: I have left a number of answers blank since this is only a demonstration. If you leave answers blank, they will be marked incorrect. 10/14/2014 Slide 10

11. When Moodle grades a problem, it shows correct answers in green, and incorrect answers in red. I received 5 of the available 20 points for the question. I can accept this score of 5, or correct some of my wrong answers, knowing that I will be penalized 2 points on my second attempt. Each submission attracts a 10% penalty, or 2 of 20 possible points in this problem. 10/14/2014 Slide 11

12. I decide to correct my mistake, so I select a different option from the drop-down menu. 10/14/2014 Slide 12

13. With the answer changed, I Submit the problem for grading a second time. 10/14/2014 Slide 13

14. On this attempt, my answer is correct. With this answer correct, I now receive 6.67 of the available 20 points. However, the penalty for the second attempt is deducted, reducing my score to 5 (with rounding). 10/14/2014 Slide 14

15. To finish an assignment, click on the Submit all and finish button. 10/14/2014 Slide 15

16. Once an assignment is submitted, answers cannot be changed and the grade is final. This dialog box offers you an opportunity to change your mind and continue working. I am finished with my demonstration, so I click on the OK button. 10/14/2014 Slide 16

17. When an assignment is finished, Moodle takes you to a screen where you can review your work. When you are finished with your review, click on the Finish review button. 10/14/2014 Slide 17

18. The screen where we started the assignment now shows that we have 1 attempt and received a grade of 5. To try again, click on the Re-attempt quiz button. Note that attempts do not write over each other, so all previous attempts are retained by the system. 10/14/2014 Slide 18
