Empathetic Listener….. • To help your mentee be better prepared to deal with the future problems that may arise, you can ask the following questions: • How can you prevent this from happening again? • What will you do if this occurs in the future? • What have you learned from this incident? • What are some benefits/drawbacks from this experience?
Influencing Actions YOU, the Mentor, can influence the outcome of the meetee/s actions. The Mentor has the power to help change the behavior and/or help develop solutions to problems
The KEY to helping out Five KEY things you will want to do: • Be an empathetic listener • Examine other perspectives • Generate solutions • Evaluate solutions • Develop a plan for carrying out the solution
Questions to Help you Out. • Empathetic Listener- reinforce what your mentee is telling you. • What I hear you saying is.. • It seems to me that you are feeling… • So what your saying is.. • Let me see if I understand what you are saying.. • Examine other perspectives • Tell me what you think the other person is thinking about this incident • How do you think the other person is feeling? • What do you think caused this person to act this way? • How is this affecting the other person?
