22. True Sight Mark 10:46-52 p. 934
True Sight • The stories of Virgil and MM
1. A Beggar beside the Road • Jericho to Jerusalem – 18 miles. • Leave the city: Bartimaeus begging beside the road • At the bottom of the social order. • We know his name ! • He might have become significant in early church
2. Son of David, Have Mercy on Me • Causes panic in the crowd – try to shut him up. • Jesus is leading the way, but the crowd is afraid (10:32) • Jesus was heading into trouble. • Most politically loaded name – “Son of David” • The ultimate Messianic title. • Blind Bartimaeus sees clearly. • Some in the crowd might be spies ... • Louis Riel – Metis leader
2. Son of David, Have Mercy on Me ... • Bartimaeus’ own perception: “Son of David” • Jesus stops and calls him. • “what do you want me to do for you?” • “Rabbi, I want to see”
3. He followed Jesus • Jesus restores his sight. • Bartimaeus “followed Jesus along the road” (v 52) • Unlike the rich young ruler, Bartimaeus has nothing. • He sits every day in the dust begging. • When he is blind he can see who Jesus is • When he can see he follows him. • 2000 years later we all still know his name !
True Sight • Bartimaeus saw who Jesus was. • What about us? • Like Virgil & MM, seeing properly requires work & the Spirit • Will we know Jesus as best we can • Will we follow what we know.
