Chapter 5 Please pick up a handout from the table in the back of the auditorium for class this morning.
Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 5 • There is nothing too hard for Jesus (John 5:5-8)! • Everything that Jesus does is right & for man’s good (5:8-14, 34). • The miracles of Jesus were immediate and perfectly complete! • The man in John 5 had an infirmity for 38 years. If truly healed, it would be obvious. • Jesus said to the man, “Rise, take up your bed and walk” (John 5:8). • “Immediately the man was made well…,” able to carry his bed & walk (John 5:9-10). • Jesus teaches salvation/eternal life by faith, but never by faith alone (John 5:24; cf. 3:5)!
Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 5 • Even if you’re a diligent Bible student, personal prejudices & human traditions will: • Blind you to the truth (John 5:33). • Prevent “His word [from] abiding in you” (John 5:38). • Prevent you from having and receiving “eternal life” (John 5:39-40). • Prevent “the love of God [from being] in you” (John 5:42). • All of the dead will be raised in the same hour at the end of time (John 5:28-29)! • Premillennialism alleges two resurrections (good, then evil) divided by 1,000 years. • Jesus teaches that, in the same hour, all the dead will hear His voice and come forth! • The Bible nowhere teaches the rapture, tribulation or 1,000 years of premillennialism.
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath (John 5:1-15)! • Although Jesus was unknown to the invalid, He healed him wholly (John 5:5-9). • It appears that Jesus purposely healed on the Sabbath Day to confront that matter. • The Pharisees said, “It is not lawful for you to carry your bed” (5:10). • The man reasoned simply and correctly in verse 11: • “The man had the power to heal me (He must be from God).” • “He must know the law and know it better than you.” • “Therefore, He did not violate the law and not make me violate it.” • Jesus, same as the Father, is the Lord of all things, including the Sabbath (cf. Matt. 12:8).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Work of Jesus Is the Work of the Father! • Jesus said, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working” (5:17). • The Jews understood that He was “making Himself equal with God” (John 5:18). • Jesus identified Himself with the Father & worked in the same fashion as the Father.
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Work of Jesus Is the Work of the Father! • Additionally, Jesus proclaimed, “The Son can do nothing of Himself…” (5:19, 30). • “Whatever [the Father] does, the Son also does in like manner” (John 5:19). • So united in their nature, work & purpose, neither could do anything of Himself. • The Son did nothing but what the Father did and approved. • The Father loves (phileo, tender affection) the Son & keeps nothing from Him (5:20).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Judgment of Jesus Is the Judgment of the Father (John 5:21-23, 27, 30)! • “The Father…has committed (with authority) all judgment to the Son” (5:22, 27). • Jesus is uniquely qualified to judge: • As the Son of God (His divine side), He knows the will of God, seeks the will of God (not His own) and can execute justice righteously and purely (John 5:25, 30). • As the Son of Man (His human side), He knows the trials and struggles of man fully and can sympathize with man in judgment (John 5:27; cf. Heb. 4:15).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Judgment of Jesus Is the Judgment of the Father (John 5:21-23, 27, 30)! • Jesus will determine whether one is raised to life or raised to condemnation (5:29). • This authority and power to judge requires omniscience, which only God possesses. • Jesus and the Father are equal! Their words & their works are in perfect harmony!
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Honor of Jesus Is the Honor the Father (John 5:22-23, 41, 44)! • There is an honor that belongs only to God and not unto man (John 5:41-44). • The reason that the Father “committed all judgment to the Son” is: • So “that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father” (John 5:23). • Jesus must be honored, just as the Father is honored, for Jesus is God! • “He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (5:23).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Life Bestowed by Jesus Is the Life Bestowed By the Father (John 5:21, 24-29, 40)! • “As the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself” (26). • Life possessed/granted by the Father is same life possessed/granted by the Son. • God promised “greater works than” the miracles Jesus was doing (John 5:20). • Namely, that “the Father raises the dead and gives life to them” (5:21). • “As the Father” did, “even so the Son gives life…” (John 5:21). The same life!
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Life Bestowed by Jesus Is the Life Bestowed By the Father (John 5:21, 24-29, 40)! • The Son is the source & giver of life – physical life, spiritual life & eternal life (5:21). • The obedient have “passed from [spiritual] death into [spiritual] life” (John 5:24). • “The [spiritually] dead will hear the voice of the Son…live [spiritually]” (5:25). • “Marvel not…for all [physically dead] will hear His voice and come forth” (28-29). • Jesus is the only source and giver of life (John 5:40; cf. 11:25; 14:6).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • The Life Bestowed by Jesus Is the Life Bestowed By the Father (John 5:21, 24-29, 40)! • The Son is the source & giver of life – “to whom He will” (John 5:21). • “The [spiritually] dead will hear the voice of the Son…and…will live” (John 5:25). • “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has life” (John 5:24). • Spiritual life comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ & our obedience to it! • Those who do His will shall experience the “resurrection of life” (John 5:29).
An Overview of John 5Theme of John 5: “Jesus Is Equal with God” • Many Are the Witnesses to the Deity of Jesus, That He Is Equal with God (5:30-47)! • Jesus Himself (John 5:31; cf. 8:14-18). • The Father Himself (John 5:32, 37-38; cf. 8:18). • John the Baptizer (John 5:33-35; cf. 1:7-8, 15, 29, 32-36; 3:26). • The Works Jesus Did (John 5:36; cf. 10:25). • The Scriptures (John 5:39-40). • Moses (John 5:45-47; cf. Deut. 18:15-18; Luke 24:44-48). • The Jews, seeing Jesus claimed equality with God, “sought all the more to kill Him” (5:16).
How Chapter 5 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • 3rd miracle in the book • Jesus asked, “Do you want to be made well” (John 5:6). • “Immediately the man was made well” (John 5:9). • Defended carrying his bed, “he who made me well said to…” (5:11). • Jesus told him that he had “been made well” (John 5:14). • He “told the Jews that it was Jesus who made him well” (John 5:15). • There could be no denying or deceit about it – Jesus made him well! • Abundant proof that Jesus is equal with God (John 5:16-47)! (See Overview Theme!)
