BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL YOUNG PROFESSIONALS KIWANIS CLUB*STATE OF THE CLUB ADDRESSMID-2013 * quite possibility the longest club name in Kiwanis
The Bloomington-Normal Young Professionals (BNYP) Kiwanis Club is celebrated it’s 4th birthday in Feb 2013 So, what have we done so far in our 2012-2013 Kiwanis year so far?
LOTS OF STUFF!
We’ve worked our backs, arms, legs, and jaws (chatting) while sorting food for the Midwest Food Bank (MFB). The MFB mission is to alleviate hunger and poverty by gathering and distributing food donations.
We accepted the Traveling Gavel from the El Paso Kiwanis Club (in a functional bird feeder). Rex from the El Paso club partners with Kindergartner kids to make up to 100 of these every year
We sorted food for the Clare House, a faith-based organization known for their soup kitchen and food pantry, during their annual fall food drive.
We celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Kewanee Kiwanis Club and were able to meet two past Kiwanis International Presidents!
We braved the freezing cold to raise money for the Salvation Army The money raised is used to provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need.
We (actually) braved the freezing cold to participate in the 2013 Polar Plunge which benefits Special Olympics Illinois athletes.
We Bowled For Kids Sake (on the same day as the Plunge, no less) to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters whose mission is to help mentor children to reach their full potential
We played Bunco to help raise money for the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation which provides grants to researchers specializing in Spastic Paralysis and other central nervous system
We hosted our 4th annual garage sale fundraiser for the Autism Society of McLean County’s Autism Camp. We raised $3,000 dollars, sending 15 kids to camp for free
Autism Camp is dedicated to providing a valuable experience for children on the autism spectrum in a natural outdoor setting on Lake Bloomington. Children have the opportunity to engage in typical camp activities, including, canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, games, and much more in a safe and supportive atmosphere
We’ve had the good fortune of having the following folks come talk to our group: • Deb Skillrud (newly elected Bloomington Township Supervisor) from Habitat for Humanity • Michele Henson from Special Olympics of Illinois • Kathy Schniedwind from the Humane Society of McLean County • Michelle Schneider and BrittinHaury from Big Brothers Big Sisters • Sonya Maufrom the Multicultural Leadership Program • Stan Cain and Josh Barnett from the City of Bloomington Beautification Committee • Patrick Dullard from the Friends of the Constitution Trail
