  1. Goals Define vocation. Identify the Universal Call to Holiness List and describe the 3 capital V “Vocations” as defined by the Church document “Lumen Gentium.”

  2. God or the Girl

  3. God or the Girl Each of these men were considering the priesthood. How did each of them go about discerning? With whom did you most relate? With whom did you least relate? How do we know a vocation is God’s call, and not someone else, or our own selfish desires?

  4. What the Church Should do Vocation and the Universal Call to Holiness

  5. Vocation “Small v” vocation: a calling to something which makes us holy “Big V” Vocation: a calling to the priesthood, religious life, or the laity What is an example of a small v vocation? T/P/S.

  6. Vocations Priesthood Religious Non-priests

  7. Priests • Preach the Gospel • Shepherd the people • Includes direct ministry to the poor and needy • Celebrate divine worship • only thing that other Vocations cannot do • Exclusively men

  8. Religious Marked by a special devotion to the Church Typically live within community Can be either priests or non-priests Calls people from both priesthood and laity

  9. Laity Positive definition: people who have been baptized into Christ’s flock Negative definition: every believer who is neither a priest nor a religious Married Single

  10. Nothing is more practical than finding God,that is, than Falling in Lovein a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get youout of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. - Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

  12. Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRMfc3GpjS0

  13. Universal Call to Holiness • Regardless of “big V” Vocation, all people have a “small v” vocation to holiness. • The call to be a good and faithful person. • We are all called to….. • Develop a personal relationship with God • To help bring about the Kingdom of God • by sharing with others • by giving to others • by doing for others • To Pray • Privately • In common

  14. Ignatian Discernment Clarity beyond doubt Movements of the heart Gospel-based logic Let us pray……

  15. Discernment How can we apply the ways the men on God or the Girl, Fr. Boyle, and Fr. Martin discerned their Vocation to our discernment of our vocations?
