People we look up to when we are children can have a great influence on how we grow up. Write an essay in which you describe how an adult – a family member, teacher, coach, minister or mentor—has influenced you. Tell a story only you can tell (because it happened to you!)Describe the event as a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Include elements great writers use: vivid description, sensory details, dialogue, etc.
Read the CLASS VOICES • Read to yourself or to a partner • Identify the themes: what main ideas are being communicated? • Which comments do you agree or disagree with? • Prepare for a class discussion in which we establish some standards for classroom behavior.
Main Idea/Themes • Thalia: loves to talk, does not like English, will not stop talking • Dezzi: problem is all people in class, not just a few who are “immature” (everybody laughs) • Zach:we need more time to talk (like 10 minutes); everyone should be respected • Gabriel: it’s the teacher’s fault; we should move and talk more and have more fun • Jennifer: when we do the same thing every day it does not work for us; (people have problems with reading); people were not honest in their responses and said what they thought you would want to hear (but only 4 people said they were not honest) • Garian: all we talk about is our behavior
